AMD 2nd-gen Ryzen 2000-series CPUs now up for pre-order

by on13 April 2018

To be available on April 19th

AMD has now officially announced details and the official pre-order launch of its Ryzen 2000-series CPUs that will use the improved Zen+ architecture and will start shipping on April 19th, alongside new X470-chipset motherboards.

Although we have already seen the full details for AMD Ryzen 2000-series Pinnacle Ridge CPUs in slides leaked earlier, it appears that those leaked prices were pretty close, putting a lot of pressure on Intel's lineup with new Ryzen 2000-series CPUs. The launch prices are also in line with AMD's recent price cuts.

In case you missed it, AMD is launching a total of four SKUs, the Ryzen 7 2700X, Ryzen 7 2700, Ryzen 5 2600X and the Ryzen 5 2600. The rumored flagship Ryzen 7 2800X is missing from the list and could eventually come at a later date. This 2nd gen AMD Ryzen desktop CPUs will be based on a 12nm Zen+ CPU architecture, Precision Boost 2 technology, full 16 PCIe lanes and support for DDR4-2933MHz memory. Unfortunately, it appears that some of these features will be limited to new X470-chipset motherboards, although Ryzen 2000-series will work on 300-series chipset motherboards, with a BIOS update, of course.

The current flagship is the Ryzen 7 2700X, an 8-core/16-thread CPU with 3.7GHz base and 4.35GHz Turbo clock and a 105W TDP, followed closely by the Ryzen 7 2700, which lacks XFR 2.0 feature and runs at the lower 3.2GHz base and 4.1GHz Turbo clocks with lower 65W TDP. Both have 20MB cache and will come bundled with Wraith Prism and Wraith Spire coolers, respectively. The Wraith Prism is the new CPU cooler from AMD with RGB colors.

The next in line is the Ryzen 5 2600X, a 6-core/12-thread SKU with 3.6GHz base and 4.25GHz Turbo clock and a 95W TDP. The Ryzen 5 2600 lacks XFR 2.0 and works at the lower 3.3GHz base and 3.9GHz Turbo clocks and has the lower 65W TDP. These two will have 19MB of cache and come bundled with Wraith Spire and Wraith Stealth CPU coolers, respectively.

In addition to the new 2nd gen Ryzen 2000-series desktop CPUs, AMD is also launching the new AMD X470 chipset and there are plenty of motherboards from all the major players. The new chipset will bring support for AMD StoreMI technology, which is the same as the earlier available FuzeDrive, and pretty much combines all drives and uses the fastest storage option for commonly-used data. It sounds pretty good on paper but we will wait to see it in action. The software will most likely be free on X470 motherboards.

As noted, the X470 chipset motherboards will also bring several other improvements, including optimized Memory Routing for higher memory frequency support and optimized VRM and power layout for improved CPU overclocking, better efficiency, and better I/O with support with more and faster USB ports.

AMD has also revealed the pricing details for its new 2nd-gen Ryzen 2000-series CPUs, putting them at US $329 for the Ryzen 2700X, US $299 for the Ryzen 7 2700, US $229 for the Ryzen 5 2600X and US $199 for the Ryzen 5 2600. These prices also mean that Ryzen 7 2700X will go against Intel's Core i7-8700/8700K CPUs and give them a good run for their money, while the rest of the lineup will do the same thing with the rest of Intel's lineup unless Intel implements some price-cuts soon.

Major retailers/e-tailers have already started listing all the X470 motherboards as well as the new AMD 2nd generation Ryzen 2000-series desktop CPUs, including the Newegg.com and Amazon.com.
