Lenovo brings back the VGA port on gaming PC

by on28 March 2023

Party like it is 1987

Lenovo’s Tower 17IRB8 features a VGA port which is an odd thing to see on what it is billing as a 2023 gaming computer.

For those who were in nappies at the time, a VGA port was state of the art in 1987 with its lifelike resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

VGA is still used in businesses and organisations that still use CRT or LCD monitors and business projectors where it can now handle a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels.

The Tower 17IRB8 has a few other bits of ancient tech. It can house two full size hard disk drives, four USB 2.0 ports and a single audio connector. These are not something we expect on a gaming computer of any flavour

The machine seems to be a bigger and heavier Intel-based SMB-friendly IdeaCentre 5i. Both accept 13th generation Core i7 processors but pair them with DDR4 memory (not DDR5), and use HDMI 1.4b (which only supports 4K at 30Hz) alongside VGA.
