Bulgarian government winners of Bitcoin lotto

Better cash them quick

If anyone turns out to be a winner of the Bitcoin lottery it should be the Bulgarian government.

Bulgarian coppers confiscated shedloads of Bitcoins from local crooks that at today’s prices are worth more than $3 billion.

In May, officials seized 200,000 Bitcoin, then worth about $500 million from crooks who were conspiring with corrupt customs officials throughout Southeast Europe to fake customs documents in a tax evasion scam.

If it were any other government, we would think the people would be happy. The country is cash strapped thanks mostly to the fact that a substantial chunk of its politicians and big business are owned by organised crime.

A local Bulgarian blog asked the government what it was doing with its Bitcoin windfall, but didn’t get an answer so it has probably been allocated towards strippers and coke for Bulgaria’s wealthy political elite.
