Edward Snowden loses it

A retired U.S. Army general and ex-director of the NSA, Paul Nakasone, has joined OpenAI as the latest addition to its board.

Nakasone will play a key role in the Safety and Security Committee, contributing his expertise to strengthen OpenAI's cybersecurity initiatives, a testament to the company's commitment to safety and security.

As reported by CNBC, the committee dedicates a comprehensive 90-day period to scrutinize the company's procedures and safety measures. This thorough review process is designed to ensure the highest standards of safety and security, and the committee will then advise the board and update the public on their findings.

Nakasone's arrival brings him alongside existing board members such as Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, and Sam Altman. It follows the recent inclusion of new members announced in March: Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo.

Edward Snowden, former NSA whistleblower turned Russian defector and mouthpiece, has expressed concerns over Nakasone's appointment.

In a statement, Snowden cautioned: "They've removed all pretence: Never trust OpenAI or its offerings (such as ChatGPT). The sole purpose behind appointing a former NSA director to your board is clear. It represents a deliberate and strategic disregard for the rights of individuals globally. Consider this a warning."

Snowden’s warning might have been a little more reliable had his own government not declared that it wanted to be a world leader in AI despite being significantly behind the US in the race. Most of Russian AI expertise is being allocated towards military projects.
