Apple slams the brakes on a large construction project

Things might not be so good behind the walled garden

The fruity cargo cult Apple appears to be suddenly cautious about its expansion plans and slammed the brakes on a huge development project.

In 2021, Apple unveiled plans for a new $1 billion campus in North Carolina, which was set to house a new engineering and research centre and accommodate up to 3,000 employees.

However, Lauren Ohnesorge of the Triangle Business Journal states that the timeline has been postponed by four years.

Since the announcement, progress on the campus has been limited, and Apple has not provided updates on construction until now.

The tech giant informed the Triangle Business Journal that work on the campus has been paused. In collaboration with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Apple seeks to extend the project's timeline by four years.

Last year, Apple submitted development plans for the initial phase of construction, but the specific timeline for the project has remained unclear.

The company's plans for the Research Triangle Park encompass six buildings and a parking garage, providing 700,000 square feet of office space, 190,000 square feet of accessory space, and nearly 3,000 parking spaces across 41 acres. Apple owns 281 acres of land where it intends to construct its campus, suggesting that there could be multiple construction phases.

In preparation for the construction of the NC research centre, Apple is currently leasing over 200,000 square feet of office space in Cary, North Carolina.

Apple claimed it was still committed to the project but did not say why it was suddenly slowing the development down.

"Apple has been operating in North Carolina for over two decades. We're deeply committed to growing our teams here. Over the past three years, we've added more than 600 people to our team in Raleigh, and we're looking forward to developing our new campus in the coming years," a spokesApple said.
