Microsoft claims Iranian spooks are trying to interfere with US elections

Wants a civil war

Software King of the World, Microsoft claims that Iran is allegedly gearing up to meddle in the upcoming US election.

According to Vole’s latest dossier, Iranian cyber-spooks have taken a shine to phishing emails, even targeting a high-profile US presidential campaign.

Vole's report uncovers a sinister plot where Iran’s digital foot soldiers have been crafting fake news sites and posing as American activists, all in a bid to stir up trouble and possibly tilt the election scales.

The Software King’s findings paint a chilling picture of how Tehran, no stranger to sticking its nose into US politics, is ramping up its efforts with some newfangled tactics that could have far-reaching consequences.

While Iran’s UN mission scoffs at the accusations, claiming it has no intention of mucking about with the US election, Vole isn’t buying it. Its report goes even further than anything US spooks have said, naming and shaming Iranian groups and their dirty deeds.

According to Microsoft, Iran’s main game seems to be sowing chaos stateside, with a particular disdain for Donald Trump, who famously ordered the hit on an Iranian general back in 2020.

Russia and China are also getting in on the act, with Moscow’s meddling machine and Beijing’s propaganda push both making their moves to stir the American pot in this high-stakes election year.

Vole laid out four recent examples of Iran’s cyber skulduggery, including a brazen attempt in June to spear-phish a senior US campaign official. The cunning Iranians even hijacked a former adviser’s email to pull it off, but Vole caught wind of the plot and sounded the alarm.

Iran’s digital army has been busy whipping up bogus websites that cater to both left- and right-wing voters, trying to deepen the divides in an already fractured nation. One site slams Trump as "raving mad" and hints at drug use, while another panders to Republicans with a focus on hot-button issues like gender-affirming surgery.

Vole also warns that Tehran’s cyber operatives are cozying up to American activists, potentially setting the stage for more interference as the election draws near. The report highlights how Iran compromised a government employee’s account in a swing state, though it’s unclear if that was part of their election meddling playbook.
