Cybersecurity expert Marc Rogers [pictured], known for his work with companies like Vodafone and Okta, as well as his contributions to the authenticity of TV shows such as Mr Robot and The Real Hustle, is currently recuperating in hospital.
Rogers explained that it will take four to six weeks for him to regain basic independence and be able to travel, while a full recovery could take up to six months. He begins physical therapy today, but his insurance only covers the first of the three weeks required because that is how it works in the Land of the Fee.
To help cover the remaining costs, friends have set up a gofundme fundraiser.
To give you the scale of how much his medical costs must be, he has held high-profile roles, including leading Vodafone UK's cybersecurity, serving as VP of cybersecurity strategy at Okta, heading security at Cloudflare, and founding Vectra. Currently, he heads up security at DEF CON, is a member of the Ransomware Taskforce, and is the co-founder and CTO at AI observability startup nbhd.ai.
He broke Apple's Touch ID sensor on the iPhone 5S and 6 and tested consumer devices like Google Glass and the Tesla Model S.
Rogers said, "It's a sad fact that in the US GoFundMe has become the de facto standard for covering insurance shortfalls. I will be forever grateful to my friends who stood it up for me and those who donated to it so that I can resume making bad guys cry as soon as feasibly possible."
The cybersecurity community has rallied around Rogers, raising over $83,000 towards the $100,000 goal set for his medical expenses.
