Scalpers cashing in

Significant stock shortages will mar the launch of Nvidia’s high-end RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards.

Despite their steep price tags of $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080, both GPUs have generated massive demand. Some consumers are already camping outside stores in hopes of securing a unit. However, reports suggest that early stock may be limited.

Manufacturer MSI has warned that initial shipments will be constrained due to the Lunar New Year holiday, affecting supply throughout the early weeks of release. Stock is expected to stabilise in February and beyond.

Several major retailers have echoed concerns over supply issues. Overclockers UK reported receiving only “single digits” of the RTX 5090 at present, and last week confirmed it had only a “few hundred” RTX 5080 units available for launch. US retailer PowerGPU also described the launch as "the worst regarding availability."

SpokesNvidia “tim” issued a statement titled “GeForce RTX 50 Series Availability” on the company’s official forum.

He acknowledged potential stock shortages, stating: “We expect significant demand for the GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 and believe stock-outs may happen. Nvidia and our partners are shipping more stock to retail every day to help get GPUs into the hands of gamers.”

With limited availability expected at launch, scalpers have already begun taking advantage of the situation. Several RTX 5090 listings have surfaced on eBay under "pre-sale," with some sellers demanding exorbitant prices. One Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listing was priced at an astonishing $5,750—an 187 per cent markup over the already costly MSRP of $1,999.
