Developers replacing 2011 sequel with a "re-imagined" game

During its E3 press conference in Los Angeles, Bethesda announced that a reboot of the original Prey (2006) first-person shooter game will be releasing sometime in 2017 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The science-fiction action game shares little similarities with its predecessor and can be described more as a “re-imagining” of the original from the ground up, with cover art very reminiscent of the movie Prometheus.

In the rebooted Prey, the game casts players into the shoes of Morgan Yu, a man who is the key subject of several experiments conducted on the space station Talos One in the year 2032. Unfortunately, the ship has been overrun by aliens and Yu must use some of his experimental powers, along with whatever is left on the ship, to fight back.

Raphael Colantonio, lead designer of the new Prey, revealed that the player will be able to steal abilities from aliens on the station. He also revealed the studio’s intent to use the name “Morgan” as a way to engender either male or female avatars.

Prey 2, originally announced in 2011, will now be “re-imagined”

The sequel to the original 2006 game was announced as early as March 2011, when Human Head Studios project led Chris Rhinehart said “We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2.” The announcement from 2011 led many to believe that Prey 2 would follow the natural progression of the original game.

The original Prey was released in 2006 by 2K Games and developed by Human Head Studios under contract for 3D Realms. The game uses a heavily modified version of the Doom 3 engine designed by John Carmack and based on OpenGL. Prey sold more than one million copies in the first two months of release and received an 83 score on Metacritic.

What we saw today during Bethesda’s E3 2016 announcement was something entirely different, sharing little if any resemblance to the original game or the story of its proposed 2011 follow-up. The game will be developed by Arkane Studios’ office in Austin, Texas and produced by Bethesda.

Bethesda has announced that more information on the Prey reboot will come from the 21st annual QuakeCon in Dallas, Texas
