SK hynix introduces new GDDR7 memory

Improvements in both performance and efficiency

SK hynix has announced the introduction of its new GDDR7 memory, which is said to be the industry's best-performing GDDR7, a next-generation graphics memory product, that brings significant improvements in both performance and power efficiency. It is expected to be mass-produced in Q3 2024.

According to SK hynix, the development of GDDR7 comes as a result of growing interest by global customers in the AI space, which does not come as a surprise. The GDDR7 from SK hynix will operate at 32Gbps, which is a 60 percent improvement in performance compared to the previous generation and can be scaled up to 40Gbps, depending on the usage. This means it can process more than 1.5TB of data per second, which adds up to 300 FHD movies (5GB) in a second.

In addition to performance improvements, SK hynix said it managed to improve power efficiency by more than 50 percent. The company also increased the layer number of the heat-dissipating substrates from four to six, and applied the Epoxy Molding Compound (EMC) for the packaging material, which has reduced thermal resistant by 74 percent.

“We will continue to work towards enhancing our position as the most trusted AI memory solution provider by strengthening the premium memory lineup further,” said Sangkwon Lee, Head of DRAM Product Planning & Enablement at SK hynix.

As said, SK hynix said the new GDDR7 is expected to be mass-produced in Q3 2024, and expects it to be adopted in AI, high-performance computing, as well as autonomous vehicles markets.
