Microsoft describes the new Surface Book as the "world's most powerful, thinnest PC" and says it is "ounce for ounce, the fastest 13-inch notebook on the planet." Designed around a 13.5-inch 3000x2000 resolution display, with 267ppi pixel density, the Surface is protected by Gorilla Glass. It features PixelSense capabilities, giving it pen and touch support.
With dimensions set at 312.3x232.1x13.0-22.8mm and weight starting at 1.516g, the Surface Book is thin and light for a 13-inch notebook. While Microsoft did not reveal any precise CPU details, it noted that there will be a choice between Intel Skylake Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs and an optional Nvidia Geforce GPU with GDDR5 memory. It comes with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage.
Most of the other specifications are similar to the new Surface Pro 4 tablet, including rear 8-megapixel and front 5-megapixel cameras, 802.11ac WiFi, magnesium chassis and more, the Surface Book comes with a special Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge, which allows the screen to open by 360 degrees and be used as a tablet with attached base. The hinge uses Muscle Wire that holds the screen attached to the keyboard base and you have to press a button to detach it.
Unlike the Surface Pro 4, larger screen allowed Microsoft to give the Surface Book a proper keyboard with backlight, 1.6mm key travel and Microsoft Precision touchpad with glass top and five point touch. According to some pictures the Nvidia GPU is housed inside the base, which will include additional battery and all the inputs and outputs, like USB ports, SD card reader, mini-DisplayPort output and SurfaceConnect port.
According to Microsoft, the Surface Book will be available for pre-order from tomorrow with a price starting at US $1,499. The price can climb up to US $2700 if you equip it with Core i7 CPU, Nvidia Geforce GPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The first devices are expected to start shipping on October 26th.
